Stars aren’t the only things that shine at the Academy Awards -- so do crystals. Lots and lots of crystals.

300,000 Swarovski crystals will be used on stage Sunday, six times as many than were when they began collaborating with the Oscars in 2007. The number it's taken to cover the stage over the last decade? 1.2 million.

Set designer Derek McLane said he was inspired by Art Deco designs and "movies from around the 1930s" in coming up with the sets on which host Jimmy Kimmel will preside during the Oscars show Sunday.

One show-stopping set filled with faux spotlights and Art Deco buildings, for example, is loosely based on the 1929 film The Broadway Melody. But McLane used glamorous, simplified versions of existing Los Angeles buildings.

It all has a La La Land feel, but the set wasn't inspired by the musical that is up for a record-tying 14 Oscars.

"I'm thrilled by the comparison, because I love the movie, but I started on this before I even saw La La Land," says McLane. "It must be something in the zeitgeist."
