NEW BERLIN - A new habachi and sushi bar is just an administrative slice away from being served up as a fresh addition to the city's City Center area.

The New Berlin Common Council on Tuesday, June 13, was expected to approve combining two lots to afford enough room for the proposed Chi Tung Hibachi Restaurant and Sushi Bar on Moorland Road just south of National Avenue.

Under the plan under consideration, the restaurant would use a vacant lot and raze the home next door to provide room for the restaurant and parking lot.

The establishment also will need a license for its full bar.

What and when

With those approvals, construction could start later this month, with an anticipated mid-October opening, said architect Daniel Glazewski.

The facility will operate seven days a week with hours of 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, and 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

It will be a welcome addition to the city, said Ed Holpfer, executive director of the New Berlin Chamber of Commerce and Visitors Bureau.

"It sounds pretty exciting," Holpfer said. "It'll be neat to have something like that in town."

Chi Tung, familiar to Chicago area diners, will have seating for 194 – some for hibachi with its entertaining performances by hibachi chefs and the rest regular seating, Glazewski said. There also will be private facilities for group dining, according to information submitted to the city.

A consultant will come from Texas to design the decor, he said.

Why here

For some time, the owners, who have operated a restaurant in the Chicago area for more than 25 years, have looked for a place to start a new restaurant, Glazewski said.

They found it in New Berlin because they view the area as up and coming with a lot of development, he said.

There also isn't another hibachi restaurant nearby, Glazewski added.
