Waukesha County Executive Paul Farrow announced June 5 that communities that participate in the Waukesha County Recycling Program received significant funds for tax relief.

The total amount of dividend payments made to communities will be $1.75 million for 2017.

“After the second year of single sort recycling; our residents have increased recycling tonnage by 40 percent, far exceeding our three-year goal of 25 percent. The increase in recycling also resulted in Waukesha County communities diverting 13 percent more material, over 10,000 tons, from landfill disposal, saving approximately $500,000 through reduced landfill disposal costs,” Farrow said.

Each year, municipalities that participate in the program receive dividend payments to offset residential recycling program costs. The payments vary for each partner based on individual program costs, tons of recyclables and recycling rate. A breakdown of the recycling dividend payment for individual communities is located on the next page.

Since it began in 1991, partner communities have collectively recycled over 536,000 tons of materials and avoided nearly $26 million in landfill disposal costs.
