Muskego - School officials say they hope construction can start in March or April on projects that will double the size of Mill Valley Elementary School, W191 S6445 Hillendale Drive.
They want to expand the school to take some of the students that would normally attend Tess Corners or Muskego elementary schools, both of which will be closed. Closing the two 1925 schools so the Muskego-Norway School District can go from five elementary schools to three was approved by district voters in the April 2016 referendum.
The plan commission approved the expansion plans last week. Muskego-Norway School Board member Chris Buckmaster who represents the schools on the commission, abstained due to the conflict of interest due to hjis position on the school board.
The school that now serves 311 students will be expanded to accommodate 550.
The current combination gym and cafeteria will become a cafeteria with its own kitchen, while plans call for a gym to be built at the far west end of the school. A new kindergarten classroom wing will be built at the south end of the building and several classrooms will be added elsewhere.
The original 1925 Mill Valley School section of the school will be razed and a new school office and library built in its stead. The school also will have a new main entrance there.
The massive additions and renovating will include installing fire sprinklers throughout the school that has kindergarten through fourth grade.
The current total area of 36,300 square feet will increase to 71,800, all on one level. Bids will be sought in February and early March. Construction will be carried out in phases, beginning with the addition on the west and south sides and some site work. The final phase will include demolishing the 1925 part of the building, constructing the library and kitchen along with the remaining site work.
The project will be completed in time for the 2018-19 school year.
With the school growing, the parking lot and playground also have to grow. The parking lot will expand to the south and be restructured. The playground will expand to the west and be paved so it can be used for overflow parking for events.
