President Trump announced on Tuesday night that he has selected Judge Neil Gorsuch of the U.S. Court of Appeals for the 10th Circuit as his nominee to fill the Supreme Court seat of the late Justice Antonin Scalia. Here's a look at five things to know about Trump's pick:

Academic bona fides

He boasts degrees from Columbia, Harvard Law and Oxford, and clerked for not one but two Supreme Court justices.

Famous mom

Anne Gorsuch Burford was President Ronald Reagan’s first administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency, later forced to resign over charges of political favoritism.

“Feeder” judge

Eleven of his law clerks have gone on to clerk for Supreme Court justices, including the late Antonin Scalia and two liberals, Sonia Sotomayor and Elena Kagan.

Leading in the polls

The popular website FantasySCOTUS consistently ranked him first among 22 potential Trump nominees in voting by readers.

Author, author

He wrote a book in 2006 on the ethics of assisted suicide and euthanasia, practices he opposes.
