What led to vacated Final Fours in the past?

Vacated Final Four Appearances
Eleven Final Four appearances have been vacated, including those of teams that played in the former consolation game to determine third and fourth place. But none of them were national champions.
1961, St. Joseph’s (Pa.): Won third place game against Utah. Vacated for impermissible benefits a player receiving from gambling
1971, Villanova: Lost national championship game to UCLA. Vacated because Most Outstanding Player Howard Porter had signed an ABA contract during the season
1971, Western Kentucky: Defeated Kansas in third place game. Vacated because Jim McDaniels had signed a professional contract during the season
1980, UCLA: Lost to Louisville in national championship. Vacated because Kiki Vanderweghe and Rod Foster were found to have received money from a booster who also was a sports agent
1985, Memphis: Lost to Villanova in championship game. Vacated due to multiple violations
1992, Michigan: Lost to Duke in championship game. Vacated by school after finding that booster Ed Martin had given impermissible gifts to players, including Chris Webber
1993, Michigan: Lost to North Carolina in championship game. Vacated for the same reason
1996, Massachusetts: Lost to Kentucky in semifinal. Vacated because star Marcus Camby was found to have received $28,000 in gifts from sports agents
1997, Minnesota: Lost to Kentucky in semifinal. Vacated due to massive academic fraud scandal
1999, Ohio State: Lost to UConn in semifinal. Vacated because head coach Jim O’Brien gave a Serbian recruit $6,000 in living expenses.
2008, Memphis: Lost to Kansas in championship game. Vacated because star Derrick Rose deemed ineligible for using a ringer to take his SAT and because his brother was found to have traveled with team for free during the season.
