While New Berlin West's girls cross-country team fell just short of qualifying for state as a team, the Vikings will be represented at the state meet.

Seniors Katey Devine and Christa Modrow earned two of the five individual spots from the WIAA Division 2 cross-country Shorewood sectional held Oct. 22 at Lincoln Park Golf Course in Milwaukee.

The Vikings' girls team took third place with 71 team points, as Wisconsin Lutheran (28 points) and Grafton (61) grabbed the two team spots at state, which is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 29, at Ridges Golf Course in Wisconsin Rapids.

"With teams like Wisconsin Lutheran, Shorewood, Grafton and Kettle Moraine Lutheran in our sectional, we knew that it would be tough," New Berlin West cross-country coach James Braun said. "Shorewood has always had our number. They beat us by five points at conference, so to finish better than Shorewood at sectionals was a nice consolation. But Grafton really ran a solid race across they board, and they are a really young team, so it will be some good competition for the next few years."

Devine completed the 5,000-meter course in 20:37.1 to take fourth place, while Modrow took seventh in 20:48.85 to become the first West girls runners to make state since Maddie Egan and Sarah Meleski in 2013.

"The pace went out really hard," Braun said. "The girls knew that they wanted to qualify as a team and that would take an extraordinary effort. Christa and Katey put themselves into position in the first 400 meters.  Halfway through the race the pace broke up a little bit.  Both Katey and Christa had to fight hard because they were in a pack of girls.

"When Christa got challenged with about a mile left she responded really well and gave a little burst to separate herself. I am really happy and excited that they qualified together."

Freshman Brynn Flanders missed qualifying for state by one second, as she took 14th in 20:59.40. Senior Allie Maniscalco (24th in 21:40.22) and sophomore Molly Thomas (29th in 21:55.50) rounded out the Vikings' scoring lineup.

New Berlin West's boys cross-country team took seventh at sectionals.

Freshman Grady Davis paced the Vikings by taking 26th in 18:13.19. Also running were senior Jacob Bishop (33rd in 18:35.66), sophomore Tommy Martin (38th in 18:57.19), sophomore Daniel Turner (41st in 19:11.20), junior Josh Pike (42nd in 19:15.34).
